Instructional Strategies
Introduction
In my classroom I use a variety of instructional strategies to ensure each student is able to develop a deep understanding of the content. Students are able to build the foundational skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways. A few of the instructional strategies I use in my classroom are integrating technology through online learning programs, using Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) strategies, and oracy presentations.
I use online learning programs (OLP's) like Lexia to build skills to be able to apply knowledge in meaningful ways. Lexia acts as a tutoring program on students' individual levels. Students are practicing many phonics and foundational skills. I am able to track student progress through the teacher facing platform. I can see what levels students are on, individual student growth, whole class growth. I use this data to address misconceptions or provide reteach lessons.
All teachers at my school attend a week long professional development session called Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD). GLAD provides teachers with skills and strategies to use to ensure English language learners are able to access and comprehend the content. Many of my students are English language learners. I can better support students to be able to develop a deep understanding of the content by using total physical response (TPR) motions, visual aids, chants, songs, and charts. These strategies are applied to the delivery of the lesson and how students are responding to the lesson.
Another way to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways is the use of oracy lessons, giving students many presentation opportunities, and channel their creative expression. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday my class has oracy lessons as a morning community meeting. Students are learning skills to become confident, opinionated speakers. Students learn how to speak audibly, agree, disagree, and set norms for a discussion. Students use these skills in the classroom as they are presenting during "author's chair." During "author's chair" students are presenting their writing and drawings to the class. Students also engage in a meaningful discussion during reading comprehension.
