Technology
Use of Online Learning Programs
Technology is integrated in my classroom in multiple ways. Students get excited about the technology in the classroom because it is fun for them to use the Chromebooks or iPads, especially if they do not have access to these resources at home. Students are able to build literacy skills through the technology and develop their 21st century skills. Students must possess the 21st century skills to be successful in their future careers and workplaces. Technology is integrated into our daily life and students must learn these skills. One way I use technology in the classroom is through using Chromebooks for students to interact with Online Learning Programs (OLP's) such as Lexia. Lexia is a leveled program for students to learn their basic literacy skills to go on to be fervent readers. Each student begins on level 1 and continues onto the different levels. By the end of Kindergarten students should be on a level 5, toward a level 6. The skills being taught and practiced connect to a variety of content blocks in class. Students are practicing phonics skills such as matching rhyming words, matching letters, and segmenting words. Students are practicing reading comprehension skills through sequencing and learning to decode to be independent readers. Students are getting practice of guided reading skills by being able to identify words, letters, and learn concepts of print. While I am pulling guided reading groups, students are working on independent work centers. One of these centers is Chromebooks- working on OLP's. Students are extremely engaged when working on Lexia because they are enjoying in online lessons with vivid colors, interactive platforms, and reaching their goals by passing levels.

As students are making progress on their Lexia levels I can monitor their progress. I can progress monitor by checking the amount of time students are spending on Lexia and what skills they are practicing. Analyzing the data is important so I can use the data to inform my practice and lessons. Recently, I have noticed through the Lexia data that students are low performing in their abilities to identify rhyming words. I can take that data and give students extra practice on that specific skill in phonics and in our morning "Do Now" work.

Lexia is a highly engaging instructional program students can engage in while in the classroom and at home, if they have access to a computer. This program develops students 21st century skills, which are vital especially in the Silicon Valley. This program also builds skills students need in order to become readers and meet their goals.
